Wood Furniture Sustainability and Why Is It Important?
Casey L | 28th November 2021
In the 21st Century, we face the aggression of bad news around the globe regarding the environment. Despite knowing more about the sources of our environmental woes than ever before, it often feels like we just can’t get ahead of the curve.
Hence, architectural and design trends have opted for a specific orientation: sustainability, care, and environment maintenance. Environmental issues have led large organisations to create furniture that does not make a threat to the planet. Sustainable furniture might also be described as eco-friendly, better for the Earth, or environmentally safe. Specific characteristics make furniture bearable, including the materials used to make it and the manufacturing process itself. For example, sustainable furniture might be made using renewable energy and composed of recycled materials. Moreover, how the table is transported from its place of manufacture to its retailer is a consideration. And the function and longevity of the furniture are a factor. As we are moving forward, we make greener choices with our lifestyles.
More and more people make greener choices with their lifestyles and find new ways to reduce their carbon footprint; thus, creating an environmentally friendly home is high on the list for those redecorating. This, coupled with wood being one of the most trending materials of the year, makes it easy to see precisely why wood is a natural choice for homeowners.
1. Concept of Green Living
With more people embracing the concept of green living, sustainability is a term that has changed the way we live, eat, spend, travel, and do just about anything.
In the face of climate change, we have developed concerns about the environment and become aware of the consequences of our shopping habits. A good product is no longer enough to win our favour; it has to align with our social and environmental values.
But, how does this translate in the furniture industry?
In response to this global demand for sustainable furniture, forward-thinking leaders from the home furnishing sector are offering quality furniture made from sustainable solid woods products made responsibly.
2. Is Solid Wood sustainable?
First of all, wood is the most environmentally friendly raw material. It’s renewable. Wood is the only building material made from sun, rain, and carbon from the air. It’s infinitely replenishable and renewable. That’s amazing when you think about it. Wood is a raw material that grows and replenishes itself every year. A lot of folks wonder if it’s environmental to cut down trees. Luckily, selective harvesting–in contrast to clearcutting–is not a problem. It’s excellent for forest health.
At furniture.hessen.sg, our wood is harvested from sustainably managed forests, socially beneficial, eco-conscious, and economically viable to ensure that they continue growing and producing wood.
3. Wood Is Durable And Lasts A Long Time
Relative to its weight, wood is the most robust building material on the planet. It’s incredibly resilient and requires little maintenance (just think about trees!).
Unlike plastic laminate, wood laminate, and other engineered woods, wood can have multiple lifetimes through refinishing.
Due to the improvements in technology over the last few decades, wood manufacturing has become a zero-waste industry. That means the Bi-products from every stage of the production process can be reused and repurposed. When we harvest wood, a percentage of it is processed into lumber, some of it is converted into other wood products, and more of it is recovered for energy production.
